Facelift Facts: What to Know Before You Go Under the Knife

Facelift Facts: What to Know Before You Go Under the Knife
Technically known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck.

If you are bothered by your aging and sagging skin, a facelift surgery may be right for you.

The most important point for anyone considering a facelift is to make sure that you have a thorough examination of your face and neck. The surgeon needs to look at your face detail by detail, to figure out the right facelift for you.

But buyer beware... make sure that you are choosing to fix the things that bother you when you look in the mirror, versus what your doctor might see as flawed.

A good patient for a facelift is one who has features that can be markedly improved.

Surprisingly, waiting until facial aging changes are significant will reduce your chances for the best result. There is really no textbook answer for the right age to get this surgery, but starting facial rejuvenation procedures in your 40s and 50s will help prevent permanent changes to your skin.

One of Chicago's leading plastic surgeons, Peter Geldner, MD, explains the risks, cost and procedure of a facelift.
