In the early moments after natural and/or intentional trauma, bystanders are often present before the arrival of first responders. Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s & Women’s empowers the general public to make a difference in a life-threatening situation through the Stop the Bleed® campaign, which teaches people the basic techniques of bleeding control.

Desiree Thomas, RN, MSN
Desiree Thomas, RN, is the Program Director of the Trauma Center at Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s & Women’s. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Biola University, and her Master of Science in Nursing from Mount St. Mary’s College. She began her nursing career at LAC+USC Medical Center, where she discovered her love of caring for critically ill trauma patients. She had the opportunity through the Navy Trauma Training Center to train Navy physicians, nurses and corpsman in trauma care prior to their deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. Desiree came to Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s & Women’s in 2006 as the Trauma/Disaster Surge Coordinator. She was active in the development of the Physician-In-Charge Program, which is a system that coordinates the medical care of patients during a disaster. She transitioned into the role of Trauma Program Director in 2012. She participates on committees at the state and regional level and speaks regularly within the surrounding area on trauma care. Desiree has been a member of the Trauma Managers Association of California since 2007, joined the board of directors in 2014, and currently is serving as the board president.
