  • Topic Info:Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a temporary mechanical support system that replaces the function of the heart and/or lungs in patients with cardiac and respiratory failure. The program at UAB Medicine is the only available ECMO program in the state of Alabama, and during the 2013 influenza season provided support for more than 80 adult patients with cardiopulmonary failure, including patients from Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

    In addition to supporting patients with influenza and ARDS, our program is involved in ambulatory ECMO as a bridge to lung transplantation, and provides support to patients with a diverse variety of cardiac procedures and disorders, including those with coronary artery disease and cardiogenic shock.
