Bill Klaproth: Understanding a physician's philosophy is important when evaluating whether or not a physician is right for you. So, let's talk with Dr. Gur Kamal Han's, Internist at Marin Health, internal medicine at UCSF Health Clinic, and let's find out her physician philosophy. This is The Healing Podcast brought to you by Marin Health. I'm Bill Klaproth, Dr. Hans, thank you so much for your time. It was great to talk with you. So, first off, what made you decide to become a physician?

Dr. Hans: The main reason for me that I decided to go into medicine was I had a family member that passed away at a very, very young age and none of my family members or any of us were clear what happened. And I was really close to my uncle and that made me more intrigued towards going into medicine, just so, because I'm the only physician in my family. So just so somebody would know more, I guess, more regarding medicine to help the family and just to have everybody involved. And that was pretty much the main reason that my uncle was one of my reasons to go into medicine.

Host: Thank you for sharing that personal story. So it was a traumatic family event that kind of led you in the direction of becoming a physician. So then why did you choose internal medicine?

Dr. Hans: For me, internal medicine. I always wanted the option, especially if I decided to specialize into something. And with internal medicine, I feel like you get much more exposure to the whole entire body per se, when you do rotations in medical school and in residency, you go through each rotation and your scope is so much more diverse and you always have the options to specialize. If you ever wanted to, you kind of focus on everything from head to toe and coordinate care accordingly.

Host: So then where did you go to school and receive your education and training?

Dr. Hans: I did all my undergrad in Canada, because I was born and raised there and medical school I went to India where my parents were born and raised and then residency, I did in Atlanta, Georgia area, and then I moved here to California. So I've kind of been all over the place.

Host: All right. So you moved to California. How did you wind up in the Bay area?

Dr. Hans: My husband is born and raised in California and he's a physician as well, so he always wanted to settle in the Bay area. I pretty much followed him here.

Host: Okay. And then how did you choose Marin Health?

Dr. Hans: He actually interviewed here first and I was working in Fresno, California, and he really loved the clinic, loved everybody and how everybody was so approachable and we love the Bay area. So that's how we ended up living here. Because he's originally from more in Tracy, California, and it was, the weather was much beautiful here.

Host: Right. So then what is your philosophy of care? How do you approach the care of your patients?

Dr. Hans: My main philosophy is to make sure the patients are involved in their care and explain to them the reasons we do everything, keeping the preventative healthcare up to date, making them involved in the decision making and just keeping them as much informed as possible. Just so they're intrigued and more willing to continue coming in and getting the follow-up care that they need.

Host: Well, Dr. Hans, this has been really interesting and we're all happy to get to know you a little bit better and thank you so much for your time and your service to our community. Thank you again.

Dr. Hans: No problem. I appreciate it. Thank you.
