Michael Zemel headshotDr. Zemel is a recognized expert in endocrine and nutritional modulation of adipocyte metabolism, mitochondrial function, energy metabolism and oxidative and inflammatory stress. This work encompasses cellular and molecular approaches to the study of adipocyte, skeletal muscle cell and macrophage metabolism and interactions, animal modelling of predicted outcomes from cellular studies, and clinical studies in obesity and the metabolic syndrome to evaluate efficacy of approaches developed in his laboratory.

He is author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, primarily describing his research into the role of cell calcium regulation in obesity, insulin resistance, and hypertension. He holds a number of patents, and his research has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control, USDA, NIH, the American Heart Association, and other public and private sector sponsors. His current work focuses on obesity genetics, the regulation of human fat cell metabolism, and novel modulation of weight control and cardiovascular risk by nutrients and food components. Dr. Zemel received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980.
