GAPS Diet: Healing Gut & Psychology Syndrome
The more we learn with our modern scientific tools, the more we realize just how correct Hippocrates was: all diseases do begin in the gut.

Science has discovered that about 90% of all cells and all genetic material of the human body belongs to the gut flora, a mixture of various microbes, which live inside our digestive tract. So, in reality, your body is just a shell providing a habitat for this mass of micro-creatures living inside you. Their role in your health and physiology is monumental.

The modern world poses many dangers for human gut flora, and once it is damaged, the health of the whole body enters a downward slide towards disease... even psychological disease, which falls under the acronym of GAPS (Gut & Psychology Syndrome).

The GAPS Diet removes foods that are troublesome to the gut and also focuses on foods that are needed to heal the gut.

For instance, meat stocks and bone broth are a big part of the diet, as they are filled with amino acids and fat soluble vitamins that heal the gut. The diet eliminates all grains and all refined carbohydrates, as well as most sweeteners (raw honey and some fruits are still allowed).

Digestive enzymes, probiotics, and cod liver oil are the main supplements that are used within the diet protocol.

It's best to introduce these foods gradually, otherwise discomfort and other side effects can result.

Kim Schuette, Certified GAPS Practitioner, joins Dr. Susanne to share more about GAPS and the diet, including which specific foods help heal the gut.
