Michael Aiona, M. D. (Guest): At the Shriners Hospital in Portland, there are physical therapists, orthotist and prosthetists who can help me manage patients in a comprehensive manner.

Hi, I’m Dr. Michael Aiona. I am a staff pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Shriners Hospital, Portland Unit and I specialize in lower extremity deformities and abnormalities. I am the Director of the Motion Analysis Center and the lead orthopedic surgeon in our spina bifida clinic.

What drew me to Shriners Hospital was as a resident, I rotated through the Salt Lake Unit for six months. I enjoyed the atmosphere, the children, the hospital setting, and it drew me to Shriners as a career. I did my fellowship at the Greenville Shriners Hospital for a year. I was on staff at the University of Kentucky at the Shriners Hospital for two years and eventually became the first full time Assistant Chief of Staff at the Shriners Hospital Portland, 33 years ago.

One fun fact you don’t know about me is that I like music and I like listening to music on vinyl, so I actually have a vinyl record player, one that actually tracks the record tangentially, that is in the Smithsonian. At the Shriners Hospital Portland, we have a motion analysis lab and state-of-the-art operative suite.
