EP 105 - Misadventures in Motherhood & Epilepsy: Your Brain Tells a Story

From the Show: Dr. Taz Show
Summary: Upon realizing an epilepsy diagnosis would set the stage for the rest of her life, Alisa Kennedy Jones sat in her doctor's office in shock and disbelief.
Air Date: 11/6/18
Duration: 31:28
Host: Dr. Taz
Guest Bio: Alisa Kennedy Jones, Author
Alisa Kennedy Jones spends much of her time writing about criminals and brash women, dipping into her own well of super-strength and hutzpah to give her characters authentic voices. In her memoir, GOTHAM GIRL INTERRUPTED: My Misadventures in Motherhood, Love, and Epilepsy, she tells it like it is with the wit and humility of someone who has a firm grasp on perspective.

Alisa deftly chronicles her life after she is diagnosed with ecstatic epilepsy. This common form of epilepsy, which has also afflicted such people as Dostoevsky, Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Agatha Christie, leaves Alisa feeling terrified, yet invigorated. At the front lines of neuro-diversity, Alisa unloads about life as a single mother with a chronic illness with brash truths and laugh-out-loud moments about the epileptic age and culture in which we all live.

Though Alisa equates her grand mal seizures to "swallowing a bolt of lightning," her experiences teach her to focus on the positives and embrace each new twist and turn she encounters—even when those twists include waking up from a seizure and having to relearn how to perform everyday tasks over and over again.

Above all, epilepsy teaches Alisa that life is about battling to discover who you are supposed to be and finding your tribe—no matter how much flopping around on the ground and wetting yourself you have to do to get there. GOTHAM GIRL INTERRUPTED reminds us that sometimes we all feel that way.

EP 105 - Misadventures in Motherhood & Epilepsy: Your Brain Tells a Story
At age 40, Alisa Kennedy Jones suffered her first epileptic seizure.

While many believe epilepsy is a condition begun in childhood, Jones quickly learned that there are many different types of epilepsy and 40 different types of seizures, depending on the type of epilepsy you have.

Upon realizing this would set the stage for the rest of her life, Jones sat in the doctor's office in shock and disbelief.

Beginning with that first in a series of grand mal seizures, which she likens to "swallowing a bolt of lightning," she says each seizure leaves her with what Zen Buddhists sometimes refer to as a "beginner's mind"--a vast, open expanse of headspace, coupled with a creative euphoria.

This state renders you less encumbered by everything you've already learned, but also challenged by having to relearn some of the more basic aspects of daily life.

As she moved through denial, fright, and grief as she dealt with her disease, Jones came to address her "new life" with comedy.

Listen as Jones joins Dr. Taz to share her story and provide light for those currently suffering with epilepsy or other seizure-afflicted diseases.
