david hill 2013Dr. David Hill is Vice President of Cape Fear Pediatrics in Wilmington, NC, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UNC Medical School. He serves on the executive committees of the North Carolina Pediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics Council On Communications and the Media.

In addition to writing a monthly column for Wilmington Parent Magazine, Dr. Hill writes and records for multiple websites including as Livestrong.com, eHow.com, and thedoctorsvideos.com. He has three children, ages six, nine, and 11.
With all the media devices out there, how do you know when it's the right time to allow your children's introduction to cell phones and iPads?

Media technology is becoming a regular part of children's lives. More and more schools are incorporating technological devices such as iPads and computers into the classroom and learning experience. And, cell phones are used for more than just calling people.

But do these media devices help or hinder your child's education and growth?

As a parent, it's important to monitor when and how your child is accessing these devices.

Dr. David Hill and Melanie Cole, MS, discuss when it's time to give your child his first cell phone or iPad, as well as tips on making sure your child is using these devices appropriately.
