Chandler Crews has a passion for writing and public speaking. Born with the most common form of dwarfism, achondroplasia, she grew up limited when it came to her own independence.

Imagining what her life would have been like if she were able to see and experience the world the way most people do, she made the decision to have corrective orthopedic surgeries in Baltimore, MD to lengthen her arms and legs. In a span of four years, Chandler went from standing at 3’10” to over a foot taller at 4’11”. During that time she gained an online presence with her Facebook page, Chandler in Baltimore.

Today, she is the founder and president of The Chandler Project, a nonprofit dedicated to helping others in situations similar to her own. You can follow her on Instagram: @chancrews
My Not-So-Short Life: Why Limb Lengthening Surgery Was Right for Me

Like many with dwarfism, I surprised my parents when I was born. Only one in 15,000 to one in 40,000 live births results in a person with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism.

Despite my genetic condition, I was a healthy baby and child. I attended a normal school and took dance lessons for 13 years. Like any other kid, I played outside, went to birthday parties and occasionally fought with my older brother and sister. In elementary school, I was shorter than my friends, but I always assumed I’d grow taller and be more independent despite my dwarfism.
