EP 839 Overcoming Abuse
Sexual abuse is more common than most people realize, affecting about one in five girls and one in 20 boys.

But, because we don't often talk about this topic, there are lots of myths about how sexual abuse happens and how to address the physical and mental health of victims... even as adults.

In her book Scared Selfless: My Journey from Abuse and Madness to Surviving and Thriving, Dr. Michelle Stevens recounts her experience of being sexually abused by her stepfather. Through her story, you can learn the truth behind common misconceptions about abuse and abusers, as well as signs to watch for.

She also talks with Dr. Roizen about how to prevent and treat related health problems -- some of which might surprise you -- including dissociative identity disorder, arthritis, high blood pressure, ulcers and cancer.
