EP 55 - Understanding Suicide
George Vernadakis of Everyday Health saw the suicide statistics and had to do something about it. Everyday Health published an extensive report about suicide risk factors and how to help.

Self injury deaths (overdose and suicide) are higher in Americans than those caused by diabetes. Suicide rates are climbing.

Suicide is complex and rarely has just one contributing factor. Financial trouble, illness, relationship difficulty and substance abuse play a role. Social media may be a factor among younger people, leading them to feel isolated and depressed.

Red Flags

  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness or isolation
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Worrying about being a burden to others
  • Changes in sleep habits
  • Substance abuse
The red flags may be subtle and may not all be present. Keep communication open with the person who is enduring some trouble.

Listen as George joins Dr. Bond to discuss the latest findings on suicide and how to help when a friend may be in need.
