Scott Webb (Host): There's positive news on the horizon for cardio patients as Montefiore Nyack hospital expects to open their cardio rehabilitation unit in early 2020. Let’s talk to Dr. Jared Corriel. He’s a cardiologist at Highland Medical P.C. and cardiopulmonary medical director for Montefiore Nyack Hospital. This is Sound Advice, a podcast from Highland Medical P.C. I'm Scott Webb. Doctor, great to have you on. First off, tell us about yourself and how you came to work for Highland Medical P.C. and Montefiore Nyack Hospital.
Jared Corriel, MD RPVI FACC (Guest): I basically am from New York originally and did most of my training in New York. I completed medical school in 2003 and did training down at Mount Sinai and then Beth Israel. Then due to family reasons we started to look to the suburbs. This was a perfect place to be. Rockland County is a terrific little suburb of New York. So I joined a practice and about four years ago we integrated with Highland Medical. We are the cardiology group for the medical groups. So I am the director of echocardiography and cardiac CT and more recently cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center which we are opening next month excited to say.
Host: Yeah. As I mentioned in my open, the new cardio rehabilitation unit is expected to open in early 2020. Give us a broad overview of the size, scope, and services that this new amazing unit will offer.
Dr. Corriel: We are really excited. We've been looking forward to this for over a year now once the state did give us the approval to go ahead with the building of it. Basically we’re going to have services throughout the weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. open to all patients in the county and beyond where cardiac rehab can be offered. Whereas right now while there are plenty of rehab centers, there's plenty of physical therapists in the area, cardiac rehab is actually pretty special and specialized. You really need exercise physiologists and therapists that are attuned to the special needs of cardiac patients. So basically there’s a broad indication for cardiac rehab. Right now people are really on waitlists when they need it because there's only one facility in the county offering it at the present time and they are so inundated. So I think we’re going to really be able to open this up for the area. It will be really great for patients.
What cardiac rehab entails is typically it’s about 36 sessions, three days a week one hour at a time. It’s done at the patient’s convenience and it has not just some quality of life benefits, but it also offers a mortality benefit. Some really amazing studies that have been done and replicated. So you're really able to offer patients just a real improvement of quality and quantity of life, which you can't say that about many things out there.
Host: No, you're right doctor. You sure can't. So who are the best candidates for this new cardiac rehab center?
Dr. Corriel: Indications for cardiac rehab are pretty extensive. So anyone who’s undergone cardiac surgery. So if someone’s undergone coronary artery bypass grafting, which is offered in the county. If they’ve undergone valve surgery either open heart surgery or more recently we’re going it through minimally invasive measures, they're candidates for cardiac rehab. In addition, anyone who’s had a heart attack, who has heart failure. If someone has blockages arteries of the legs where really the primary therapy is medication adjustments as well as rehab itself we can now offer that. So it’s really quite a broad scope of patients that can benefit from cardiac rehab.
Host: It sure sounds like it doctor. I know you're really excited about some of the other things going on on top of this new cardiac rehab center. Tell us about that.
Dr. Corriel: Montefiore Nyack is kind of undergoing a transformation. It’s really going to be a real great attribute for the county itself because we’re not just offering cardiac rehab, but 2020’s also brining the addition of a cath lab. So we’ll be able to offer stinting across really 24 hours a day in Nyack where we didn’t offer it before. We’ve really expanded our imaging center. So this really is going to round out the new offerings for the lower half of Rockland County. I think that the county is really going to benefit as such for it. We’ve already hired a couple of great exercise physiologists that are really well experienced and well trained. They're excited to join on right now. I think we’re getting ready to really start offering it. Mid-January the doors will open. We really have the pleasure of taking a tour only this week and things have come along tremendously.
Host: Yeah, that sounds awesome doctor. I assume you posted some pictures on social media.
Dr. Corriel: That will be coming soon enough. My picture taking ability is not so great.
Host: Lastly doctor, how can folks get ahold of you?
Dr. Corriel: If they want to speak with me directly, we’d be happy to. My group is a group of three cardiologists: myself, Dr. Brian, and Dr. David Southern. We’re always here. We have an office at Nyack Hospital. We’ll always be there when cardiac rehab, when the facility’s opened. We’ll always be on campus just in case there are any issues and if there are any questions that arise. They can always call. My office is 845-268-0880. The number to Nyack Hospital itself is 845-348-2000. You can always go on the website of montefiorenyack.org. There's tons of great information. There's newsletters and we’re always more than happy to share whatever we can with whoever would like to discuss.
Host: Doctor, thanks so much for all of that great information. It does sound like a great time for Highland Medical P.C., Montefiore Nyack Hospital, and mainly just the community.
Dr. Corriel: Yeah, absolutely. We’re really excited about all of this and all of the new additions to Nyack and new construction that’s wrapping up this year as well. So really a lot of exciting changes are coming and it’s going to be really great for the community. Things that really bring us to the forefront of medicine and just really it will be state of the art technology that’s out there.
