Melanie Cole (Host):  Welcome. This is It’s Your Health Radio with Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. I’m Melanie Cole and today, we’re discussing online classes and seminars from Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Joining me is Charmine Navarro. She’s the Community Education Program Coordinator for Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Charmine, it’s a pleasure to have you join us today. before the COVID restrictions were put in place, Henry Mayo offered a wide variety of classes and seminars for the community. Tell us about those and how this initiative has evolved during this pandemic.

Charmine Navarro, MSN, RN (Guest):  Henry Mayo has made a commitment to the community. Back in 2016, they opened up community education with live clinical classes for the community. All our classes are offered by nurses, dieticians, physical therapists. So, they are all clinical experts and since this pandemic happened, of course our department closed down. So, I wanted to make sure that we could continue to reach these patients and community members and we moved towards a virtual online Zoom webinar classes.

We started in April with adding a few classes to see how they would go and doing outreach that we could. And we’ve managed to expand that. We’ve offered several classes on different health and wellness topics to continue to educate our community. We’ve created some new classes and we just want to make sure that our community, our population out there, has the ability to still have that conversation with clinicians that can help educate them, keep them healthy and well especially during this time when they’re at home. So, this offers them an opportunity to continue to expand their knowledge and work on their health and wellness even in quarantine at home with the stay at home orders.

Host:  So, tell us how it was organized? I mean schools have had to do a lot of shuffling around and tell us what that looked like and how it was set up.

Charmine:  As we had it before of course people would register online. Currently, what we’ve done is we have a Zoom classroom, we call it. we’ve worked with our marketing department. They’ve set up a landing page for us at the Henry Mayo.com under community online classes. What we’re able to do now is we launch a seminar. All the topics are there. We launch a seminar. They can see the instructor; they can see the Power Point and then they can communicate and ask questions and interact with the staff as it is right now. Currently, we are offering them online in a webinar format where people can see the instructor and they can also see the Power Point information, receive the content that they need but as well as asking questions to clarify anything that they need. So, there’s still that interaction which we felt was very important with clinical education to give them the opportunity to ask the experts questions that they need to clarify their answers.

Host:  So, before we talk about some of the more popular classes Charmine; is there a cost to this?

Charmine:  No, that’s the wonderful thing about Henry Mayo. We offer these classes free to anyone in our community, to our patients, our population and now even with the online options, it’s expanding outside of our community. A majority are still in our community, but again, all our offerings are free.

Host:  That is fantastic. Now tell us about some of the more popular classes, practicing mindfulness, healing circle, baby care basics. Tell us about those.

Charmine:  So, I’d say our most popular class right now on the online is our Practicing Mindfulness. We know that this pandemic and this stay at home orders and this quarantine has caused so much stress for a majority of people. And then the unknown about jobs. So, we have a certified mindfulness instructor Kimberly Nunlie [00:03:52] and she offers her practicing mindfulness every Monday at 4 o’clock and we get 40 to 50 people signing up. Our other popular classes are a lot of our nutrition and wellness classes so we have plant-based eating which the research out there is showing that plant-based is the way to go and we have our expert dieticians speak about how you can implement more plant-based nutrition into your diet. So, those are some of our popular ones.

We’re also working with schools. So, some of our schools we know are doing online now. My kids are in high school and PE and all the athletics isn’t really happening so, we’re working with some of the trainers from our facility. They are offering free exercise classes. We’re offering our dieticians and myself, we have adapted some of our classes to teen education. We partner with the schools and their having their students sign up for the curriculum and giving them credit for that. So, we’re very thrilled to be partnering with that. We’re also working with nursing schools sending their students to attend our classes and gestation diabetes may not be, they are not suffering from it, but they are able to learn about the content from some experts with the latest evidence based. So, such a wide variety and we’re having great response. Again, nutrition classes, and the healing circle is another one during the stressful time, you kind of get together and meet, it’s almost a support group where you can talk about what’s stressing you out and work on breathing and things of that nature.

Host:  Wow. That really is amazing. It’s remarkable. And I’m so glad that you’re doing that but I’m curious, do you have any COVID classes? Are those popular? Do people want information or managing COPD, some real medical classes?

Charmine:  So, we still are continuing our medical classes, absolutely. So, we do a heart attack prevention class, treatment recovery, heart failure class, COPD as well. So, we still have all our clinical education disease specific. We don’t have anything COVID specific. There’s a lot of information out there. It’s changing constantly. But we weave that into a lot of our pneumonia prevention lecture, COVID, I’ve brought that in there and continue to keep updating that. COPD I know she discusses the COVID and how it’s adapted. So, while it’s not specific to COVID, we do adapt the latest research into each of our classes on how COVID is affecting.

Host:  So, I understand that you plan to return to in person instruction someday, but for now, these online courses are filling a clear need. How are they being received? What are you hearing from people that are taking the classes?

Charmine:  So, the feedback has been wonderful. There will always be a population that prefers the in person so yes as clinicians, we like that interaction, but this has helped open up a new form for us that we plan on continuing into the future because we do know there’s people that can’t make it in. So, yes, in the future, we will open back up to live classes and we want to continue our outreach in that area. But we are so excited to be able to continue this Zoom education offerings online.

Host:  Tell us where to find what classes are available and what’s involved in signing up?

Charmine:  Signing up, it’s not our regular landing page. We’ve kind of worked with marketing to make a temporary fix. But if you go to the Henry Mayo. Com main webpage: there is a bar across the top where you can select the community tab and it brings a dropdown and on there, you dropdown to it says online classes. You can click on that link which will then give the list of all the classes, dates and times that they are offered. The other thing that we can do so is we are offering them on demand for 30 days after the original class so they can also then, if they see a class they like; they can click on that link even if it’s past and if it’s one that is offered on demand, we will send you a video to watch the class recording and then they can always contact us at any time. But they can register. It’s pretty easy. It just requires an email address to view any of our classes. It you are viewing it on a computer, it will send you a link and a password. They are secure classes with individual passcodes so that we don’t want people to hack into our classes. So, they get that link, they cannot share it. if it’s one for the recording, they will also then get a link to that recording as well. And it’s pretty simple to sign up.

If you are watching it on a Smart Phone; the only difference is a Smart Phone does require that you download the Zoom app to watch it and listen.

Host:  What a great program and a great initiative for the community. Wrap it up for us Charmine. What would you like listeners and the community and even the wider community to know about the online classes available for free at Henry May Newhall Hospital?

Charmine:  The one thing we would like to say to wrap it up is we are here for you. We care. We want to make sure that you continue on your health and wellness journey and we want you to join us. If you have any questions, we are available Monday through Friday. Give our department a call and it’s 661-200-2300. We can always help guide you through signing up, but we want you to know we are here for you. We do care and we will help you on your health and wellness journey.
