You Should Get Your Prostate Checked!
Prostate cancer occurs in the prostate gland, which is a small-sized structure that makes up part of the male's reproductive system.

Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. In fact, it's also one of the leading causes of cancer death among men.

What are the risks of developing prostate cancer?

One of the major risk factors in developing prostate cancer is age. Typically, the older you are, the more likely you will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, one in 10,000 men under the age of 40 will be diagnosed, one in 38 for ages 40-59, and one in 14 for men between the ages of 60-69.

Other risk factors include your family history, genetics and lack of exercise.

What are the symptoms associated with prostate cancer?

It's important to know that not all men will experience the same symptoms, and the only way prostate cancer can be determined is through a series of medical tests provided by your doctor. Some of the symptoms include blood in your urine, stiffness in your lower back, a need to urinate frequently, difficulty starting or stopping urination, difficulty having an erection, and a painful or burning sensation while urinating.

Is there a way to prevent prostate cancer?

One of the best preventative measures to help decrease your risk of prostate cancer is getting it checked. The American Cancer Society recommends that men should have their first screening at the age of 50. However, if you have a family history of the disease, it is recommended to discuss testing with your doctor.

What else do you need to know about prostate cancer?

Dr. Anup Shah joins Dr. Leigh Vinocur to discuss prostate cancer, ways to treat it and how you can prevent this potentially dangerous disease.
