There are a lot of vitamins on the market, and it's hard to sort out which ones you should be taking. As the female body changes over time, so do vitamin requirements.

Dr. Christopher Calapai has sorted out which vitamins women need at different ages.

In your 20s and 30s:
  • Calcium - 1000mg daily to maintain bone mass
  • Vitamin D - 2000 IU daily to help hormones
  • Folic acid - 400 micrograms daily to prevent birth defects
  • Iron - 16-20mg daily for red blood cell health, 27mg if pregnant

In your 40s:
  • Calcium - 1000mg daily to maintain bone mass
  • Vitamin D - 2000 iu daily to help hormones
  • Folic acid - 400 micrograms, raise to 600 micrograms daily if pregnant
  • Iron - 18mg daily for red blood cell health, 27mg if pregnant

In your 50s:
  • Multivitamin designed for those over 50
  • Calcium - 1500mg daily
  • Vitamin B12 - 2.4 micrograms daily, since it's not absorbed into the body as easily

In your 60s, you should reassess your multivitamin and add supplements for any new health developments as appropriate.
