From the Show: Cannabis Grand Rounds
Summary: Our ongoing series on psychiatry is moving to insomnia today.
Air Date: 6/6/22
Duration: 10:06
Guest Bio: Dr. Tiffany Buckley, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP
My passions include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, medical cannabis, teaching, curriculum design, and evidence-based medicine. Currently, I practice as an advanced practice psychiatric pharmacist at a maximum-security psychiatric hospital in Maryland. I specialize in medication management for psychiatric patients who are involved with the legal system. My patients have dual diagnoses of severe mental illness (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) and cannabis use disorder; therefore, I send time educating staff and patients about the effects of cannabinoids on mental illness.

I believe education is the way to change the world. I have an extensive history of teaching and curriculum design, which I began when I worked as a high school Chemistry teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools through Teach For America. Thanks to various mentors fostering my professional development, I now serve as Faculty in the MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. I am course manager for Advanced Cannabis Therapeutics for Neuropsychiatric Conditions (MCST 606). Working with a talented team of instructional designers and medical cannabis professionals, I spearhead and implement the creative design of this course. In MCST 606, I teach students how to dissect the latest evidence to explore cannabis’s place in therapy for the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders through complex, reality-based patient cases.

Pathophysiology of Insomnia with Dr. Tiffany Buckley
Our ongoing series on psychiatry is moving to insomnia today. A bad night's sleep, especially on a consistent basis, can affect nearly every moment of waking life.

Dr. Leigh Vinocur MD, MS sees a lot of patients that complain of insomnia (it's been a rough 2 years). So this episode will focus on the clinical evidence and data around the use of cannabis for insomnia.

While the evidence is small, some research suggests that low doses of THC can help patients get to sleep and stay asleep.

For this conversation, we are joined again by Dr. Tiffany Buckley, PharmD, BCPS, BCPP, an Advanced Practice Psychiatric Pharmacist working with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Masters in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics (MCST) Program.
