Saving Money on Healthcare Costs
Healthcare isn't cheap, especially if you're struggling with chronic conditions.

Fortunately, you can take some simple steps to reduce your healthcare costs.

For instance, take a good look at your insurance plan. Calculate how much you spend each year on doctors’ visits, dental visits, etc., and balance your premium with the benefits your plan offers. Then, actually take advantage of some of those benefits, such as 24-hour on-call nurses, gym memberships, and weight loss programs.

The lowest premium doesn’t always mean the lowest costs.

Also, you absolutely must read your bill closely. A study estimates that 50 percent of doctor bills contain billing mistakes. And, if your insurance company initially says they won't cover something, look into it further. You can resubmit claims... just because they don't cover it at first, doesn't mean they won't eventually.

Be up front with your doctor about your financial situation. He or she may suggest a lower-cost treatment, or work with you on lower prices.

And don't be afraid to ask for samples.

Finally, preventative health is key in reducing costs. Lifestyle changes can make a huge difference in reducing what you pay for healthcare.

In this edition of "Healthy Steps with Dr. Ginger," she, Lisa and Andrea discuss these tips and more for saving money when it comes to your health.
