Sleep is so essential for optimal health.
Unfortunately, many individuals simply aren't getting the sleep they need on a regular basis.
In this edition of "Healthy Steps with Dr. Ginger," the good doc joins Lisa to share ways you can overcome your sleep issues and finally get a good night's sleep.
First, slow down, turn off your mind and create a relaxing bedtime technique such as a hot bath/shower or soothing/relaxing music. Some people even get sleepy from exercising a couple hours before bed. Also, your bedroom should be a sleep haven, which means no electronics or other artificial sources of light.
Second, it's important to establish a consistent sleep and wake schedule. Your body was meant to rise with the sun and sleep as it sets. Try as much as possible to go to bed at the same time every night and wake at the same time every morning.
If you're still having trouble after making some of these changes, you can turn to natural sleep aids such as melatonin, valerian root, lemon balm, or even foods with tryptophan, magnesium and B6, (bananas, sunflower seeds, legumes, dark leafy greens, almonds, cashews). For sure you should limit alcohol, caffeine and sugar before bed (and during the day if possible).
Why is this so important?
Because lack of sleep literally wreaks havoc on your health.
Issues caused by lack of sleep can include acid reflux, obesity, cancer and even early death. When you don't get enough sleep (or quality sleep), it affects your hormones, which in turn impacts every system in your body.
