Subbarao received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Mysore, a Masters degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Bombay and a Doctorate in Physical Inorganic Chemistry from the University of London. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemistry. He has published a number of papers in chemistry, a book on the Bhagavad Gita and a book on the Ayurvedic herb Brahmi. He has worked in various capacities as a research scientist, educator, academic administrator and consultant to nutraceutical companies.
